If you’re caught hiding things in the engine compartment of your car it’s never a good sign, but when it’s a cool R50 million worth of unwrought gold then you’ve got some serious explaining to do.
The Hawks made the arrest in Springs on Monday evening, following a tip off that someone was running gold between the North West and Gauteng.
Below from EWN:
In a statement, the police said, “He was driving alone in a Silver Audi when the Hawks swooped in. Upon searching the vehicle, unwrought gold was found stashed in the Audi’s engine compartment. The gold was seized and the suspect was arrested and will appear at the Springs Magistrates Court on Thursday.”
The Hawks are pretty chuffed with themselves, National Head of the Hawks‚ Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, having this to say to TimesLive:
“The arrest is closely linked to ongoing syndicate investigations by the Hawks. A few weeks ago we shut down a drug lab in Johannesburg‚ (and) last week alone we cracked more than three syndicates around the country.”
Good job guys, how about next you target the corrupt top brass fleecing this country of millions each day?
