National Geographic’s International Drone Photo Competition Winners Are Spellbinding

It’s weird to think that drone photography is now in a category all on its own. However, from drone selfies to capturing images from a point of view otherwise not seen, it has to be a standalone genre of photography.

Just yesterday we shared haunting images that only a drone could capture, detailing the destruction in Baghdad after a double bomb went off on Saturday evening.

Now, after thousands of entries submitted by photographers into the third annual International Drone photography competition, the winners have been announced and they are absolutely spellbinding.

The competition was judged on creativity and photographic quality by a panel of judges, including National Geographic Deputy Director Patrick Witty, Emanuela Ascoli, Photo editor of National Geographic France and Dronestagram.
Placed in three categories, here are the top three in Travel, Sports Adventure, and Nature Wildlife. Compared to last year, entrants have definitely upped their game.

2nd Prize Winner – Category Nature Wildlife: Swarm of sheep by Szabolcs Ignacz

3rd Prize Winner – Category Nature Wildlife: Piton de la fournaise, Volcano by Jonathan Payet

1st Prize Winner – Category Sports Adventure: Moab Rock Climbing by Maxseigal

2nd Prize Winner – Category Sports Adventure: Complejo Acuático Norte de Santander by losmanesdeldrone

3rd Prize Winner – Category Sports Adventure: Chugach Mountain Range, Alaska by High Angle Shot

1st Prize Winner – Category Travel: Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, Umbria, Italy by fcattuto

2nd Prize Winner – Category Travel: Cable Beach by Todd Kennedy

3rd Prize Winner – Category Travel: Summer camp of Gran Canaria by Karolis Janulis
