  • So, Did Oscar Really Cut His Wrists In Prison This Weekend?

Just when you think the noise around Oscar Pistorius has died down, his name once again dominates headlines around the world.

That’s because Sunday saw City Press breaking an exclusive story, Oscar allegedly having cut his own wrists on Saturday before being rushed to Pretoria’s Kalafong Hospital.

That’s not the official story coming from correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, who says Pistorius told authorities he had injured himself after falling out of bed, but let’s see that exclusive then:

…an inmate situated close to the hospital section told City Press that Pistorius had injured himself intentionally.

Two warders with knowledge of the hospital section said blades were subsequently found in Pistorius’ cell during a search yesterday afternoon.

Two security guards at Kalafong Hospital, which is situated east of Pretoria, told City Press yesterday that Pistorius was admitted at 12.30pm.

“He had bad cuts on his wrists and the doctors kept wrapping bandages around them,” said one.

This isn’t the first time the contents of Oscar’s cell have come under scrutiny, a raid three weeks ago finding a few worrying items:

City Press has established from two warders, as well as an inmate, that the raid was conducted after authorities began to fear that Pistorius planned to harm the prison’s health manager and professional nurse Charlotte Mashobane, who testified against him at his sentencing proceedings and painted him as a violent person.

“They found a pair of scissors, [prescription] drugs and six anti depression pills hidden in his cell,” said the inmate.

This information is also contained in Pistorius’ prison “journal”, in which all incidents involving the prisoner are recorded.

Nxumalo confirmed an investigation into Pistorius was under way by a correctional services investigator, but refused to reveal further details because “the investigation is at the sensitive stage and revealing many details could affect the process”…

Prisoners are not allowed to be in possession of sharp objects, such as scissors, because they could be used in a violent act…

A warder told City Press that prison nurses sparked the investigation after they became concerned that Pistorius might overdose on the additional pills inside his cell.

“He is a very angry man,” said one of them.

Following the news of the hospital visit breaking, family members were quick to shut down the rumours of self-harm, Here’s News24:

“I know that there are reports saying that he tried to injure himself – they [are] completely untrue and sensational,” Carl Pistorius tweeted on Sunday. “He slipped in his cell and injured himself, nothing serious”…

Carl Pistorius asked people not to believe the media reports, labelling them “crazy”, “unreliable” and “baseless”. The older Pistorius said that he had visited Oscar over the weekend with “Jenna”.

“He is doing well given the circumstances.  He was in good spirit.”

Although, it was unclear to whom the ‘Jenna’ in the tweet was referring, during previous court appearances, an ex-girlfriend of the Paralympian, Jenna Edkins, was seen supporting his family.

“It was great to see him. He sends love to everyone, especially Aimee,” Carl Pistorius said on Twitter. Aimee is the younger sibling in the Pistorius clan.

I guess, like most aspects in this ongoing drama, it’s a matter of which version of events you believe. City Press seem to be sticking to their guns, and the prison is predictably remaining mum on most allegations.

Either way, I think it’s clear that Oscar isn’t really enjoying himself behind bars.
