  • Hectic Footage Shows Explosions And Gunfire As Robbers Hit Cape Town Cash-In-Transit Van

Exactly a month after the daylight bombing of two cash-in-transit vans in Boksburg, another explosive heist went down, this time in the Mother City.

Cash-in-transit robbers struck on Monday morning, shooting and blowing up a G4S cash-in-transit van with explosives along Jakes Gerwel Drive, near Hanover Park.

The brazen heist took place just 200 metres away from the Philippi police station.

According to G4S Cash Solutions MD Keith Alberts, one of their armoured vehicles had been attacked while performing a cash collection in Athlone, per a report by Times LIVE:

A large number of armed robbers opened fire on the vehicle bringing it to a standstill. The robbers used commercial explosives to gain access to the vehicle and‚ at this stage‚ the cash loss is unknown.

Take a look at the eyewitness footage of the heist unfolding and the aftermath, courtesy of News24:

The commentary on this one is quite something:

Thankfully, no bystanders or motorists were injured, although the gunshots caused some chaos among motorists who tried to get away from the scene. A security officer, who wore a GS4 uniform, was said to be walking around with his head covered by a bandage.

After the heist was over and the road was closed, a team of forensic experts arrived before 11AM to search the the scene for clues:

    Via the Times LIVE report:

The road was cordoned off as residents of Hanover Park and Manenberg gathered nearby‚ some suggesting that if the wind picked up the wet cash would blow in their direction.

The side of the cash van appeared to have been ripped open. There were bullet impact marks on the front windows.

The road was reopened at 2PM.

*Sigh* Will these crimes just end already?

If the spike in cash-in-transit heists are anything to go by, my hopes aren’t going to be rising any time soon.
