I’ve always preferred Jim Carrey’s more serious roles, and he really delivers in this one.

Kidding is a new series about a man named Jeff Piccirillo (Carrey). who is clearly on the edge of breaking, without ever actually breaking.

Jeff is beloved as the host of a children’s show, so much so that strangers call him Mr Pickles on the street. He is so immersed in the character that he continues to give out advice to small children, even after the cameras stop rolling.

    Here’s Collider:

When he pulls out a talking ukulele on Conan, fellow guest Danny Trejo barks in his trademark growl, “Everyone knows Uke-Larry!” But Mr. Pickles’ personal life is in shambles. One of his sons—half of a pair of twins, Phil and Will (Cole Allen)—was killed in a car accident involving a faulty traffic light and a cake truck.

His wife, Jill Pickles (Judy Greer, bringing 110% to an unfortunately thin role), left him shortly afterward. Suddenly, the man who gave sweet guidance to generations has no idea where to go himself but down, down, down.

Kidding is odd but entertaining, with some dark humour thrown in. Check out the trailer:

The Daily Beast are certainly won over, calling his performance “astounding”, and saying it may be “the most poignant career choice he’s made”.

Kidding premiers on Sunday, September 9.
