  • Please Can We Stop Using the Word ‘Glamping’?

If I hear the word ‘glamping’ again, I think I might curl up into a ball and rock myself to sleep, crying. It’s almost as nauseating as the word ‘Brexit’. Honestly. It’s probably just one notch below.

I find the term (‘glamping’) is used very broadly, with unsophisticates falling all over themselves on Instagram at the sight of a duvet in their tent, rather than a sleeping bag.

“Oh my god, this place is so larny!”

    Then you get this:

Now would it be fair to say that just because something is off-the-grid and is built with sustainable Rhino Wood, it should then be classed as ‘glamping?’

Is it viable to tarnish Meryl Streep and Robert Redford with the ‘glamping’ brush, in the classic Out of Africa? No, that would be rude.

    This is beyond glamping, friends.

The above photographs are of Goshawk’s Nest, the new addition at Cabine du Cap. This addition makes it the most glamorous Klein Karoo bush experience, for four people, not just two.

Built on a 150 square metre Rhino Wood deck (and inside walls), Goshawk’s Nest is to glamping what Versailles is to a Wynberg fixer-upper.

    And it’s all there:

    • Presidential safari tent with solid wood doors and Persian rugs
    • Luxury 4-poster extra length bed and deluxe mattress
    • 100% cotton linen
    • Bathrobes and slippers
    • Inside Rhino Wood bathroom with bath on legs
    • Outside bathroom with shower and metal bath under the stars
    • Melvill & Moon furnishings
    • Malawi Cane furnishings
    • Africology toiletries
    • Skyfan ceiling fan
    • Smeg minibar
    • Bose Bluetooth speaker
    • Electric outdoor, indoor and reading lights
    • Hot water bottles bed turning
    • Fully off the grid
    • No cellphone signal
    • Optional high-speed wi-fi (can stream audio/video)
    • Butler on call 24hrs via walkie-talkie
    • Includes breakfast cooked for you on the boma
    • All meals catering available

The tent is not available on its own and comes in addition to the main cabin. It is positioned some 50 metres away from the main cabin, with the boma, pool and bush shade area separating the two.

Cabine du Cap is a luxury, boutique lodge, hidden in the Klein Karoo mountains, just two-and-a-half hours out of Cape Town. You usually have to book in advance – check the live availability calendar / online booking system here.

You can’t really do the area justice unless you’re playing ball on the environmental front, which is why Rhino Wood was chosen. Theirs is a sustainable wood that, through a specialised treatment process, has the dimensional stability and physical properties of a hardwood, making it a far superior product to its original form.

Rhino Wood is strong, durable and maintains its appearance even in the harshest of outdoor environments, without maintenance or any harmful chemicals added.

And before you ask, YES, Goshawk’s Nest also has the same tin bath under the stars that made the Main Cabin famous. Check it out…
