This morning brought with it the shocking news of a hit carried out at Green Point’s elite Reddam House school, with top Cape Town advocate Pete Mihalik executed at around 7:35AM on the corner of Cavalcade and Thornhill roads.

Mihalik was dropping his eight-year-old son off at school when an unknown gunman shot him in the head. Mihalik was killed, and his son was taken to hospital, with sources telling us he was grazed by one of the bullets and is fully conscious and talking.

Mihalik’s daughter, who was also in the car at the time, was unharmed.

News24 carries this image, which neighbours say is the son’s backpack:

We covered the story in full here.

There is much conjecture around what led to the hit, but Times LIVE believe it may be connected to the trial of alleged extortion syndicate boss Nafiz Modack‚ which is due to start next week in the Cape Town Regional Court:

Mihalik led several other lawyers representing Modack’s four co-accused — Colin Booysen‚ brother of alleged Sexy Boys boss Jerome (Donkie) Booysen‚ Ashley Fields‚ Jacques Cronje and Carl Lakay — when they accused the police of corruption during a bail hearing earlier this year.

They tried to implicate investigating officers under the command of Major-General Jeremy Vearey in working with alleged mafioso Mark Lifman.

The investigating officer in the case‚ Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear‚ denied that an interview he had with Lifman in Sea Point over a crimen injuria case against Cronje was evidence for collaboration.

Mihalik withdrew from the case and handed the reins to his partner‚ Bruce Hendricks‚ after he was accused of brokering extortion deals involving rich Jewish businessmen in Cape Town.

He denied the claim and state prosecutor Esna Erasmus told the court the allegation was not admissible and irrelevant to the court proceedings at the time.

Mihalik alleged that the extortion case was an extension of a war over nightclub security which has seen numerous hits and shootings since 2016.

Lakay was shot in a hit outside his house in Goodwood in August. His shooting came shortly after “Donkie” Booysen [above] was shot and injured in a Spur in Kuils River‚ sparking battles between gangs on the Cape Flats.

A few weeks later Fields’ brother was shot while driving his BMW with his daughter in Salt River. Colin Booysen was also allegedly targeted in a hit in Belhar last month‚ an incident which resulted in the alleged gunman being killed and Booysen being charged with murder.

The Cape underworld power struggle has been going on for the best part of three years – News24 has done a superb piece looking into the big players here.

Reporter Mandy Wiener, who first broke the news of the shooting this morning, said the following:

“Over the past two years, a ‘turf war’ has been playing out in Cape Town between a more established grouping linked to Sea Point businessman Mark Lifman and a new faction headed by Nafiz Modack. The Booysen brothers, Colin and Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen, have been divided, with Colin siding with Modack and Donkie with Lifman. The result has been numerous tit for tat shootings and attempted and successful assasinations. It’s believed Mihalik found himself deeply involved in this standoff and attempted to intervene to resolve the dispute.”

Sources say that Mihalik was under 24-hour protection from a security company, but his bodyguards only arrived shortly after the shooting.

Mihalik took the same route to school every morning. Forensic analysts have been working the scene all morning.

A family living nearby described the scene:

A family who lives nearby have shared how they heard two shots. The mom said she saw the shooter walking away fast from the scene.

He had a briefcase or something to hide his gun, she says.

It was a silver gun but almost looked like a toy gun. She said it was so brazen and things happened so quickly that she didn’t know what to do.

It was then that she heard a girl in the car screaming for an ambulance.

It’s worth repeating that Mihalik’s wife committed suicide back in 2015, meaning the children are now without either parent.
