  • How Social Media Is Driving Gin Sales Through The Roof

We know Aerosmith are big fans of the colour pink (it’s their favourite, according to that song), but it’s not for everyone.

When it comes to gin, it appears the opposite is true, and pink gin is now the major driving force behind the growth of gin sales around the world.

Takealot features two pink gins on its list of best-selling spirits, and over in the UK, experts credit pink gin with the spirit’s remarkable resurgence.

    Spirit Business reports:

…gin sales in the UK have been valued at £1.9 billion (US$2.4bn) in 2018 after more than 66 million bottles were sold during the 12-month period.

The WSTA [Wine and Spirit Trade Association] says the growth was down to sales of pink and flavoured gin as new products continue to enter the market.

Flavoured gin sales have driven half of all growth of gin in the UK in the last recorded 12 months, despite only representing one fifth of total sales. Almost three quarters of the flavoured gin category’s growth was boosted by pink gin.

Told you pink gin was killing it.

That resurgence is occurring largely in consumers under the age of 45, with the aesthetic element, especially when it comes to social media, proving important.

Pink gin, and pink cocktails, are deemed more ‘Instagrammable’ – I mean, look at this beauty:

The more eagle-eyed out there might notice that that’s an old-school Cape Town Gin ‘Pink Lady’ bottle, which has since undergone a sleek redesign.

The Pink Lady is made with the purest neutral spirit, and then infused with rose petals, hibiscus flowers and a heavenly hint of rosewater. This results in a delicious gin with fresh floral aromas and a slightly sweeter aftertaste.

And yes, it’s very, very Instagrammable.

Experts predict that the same trends will continue through 2019, with new flavoured and coloured gins entering the market abroad, although it seems that people in South Africa already have their favourites nailed down.

If you prefer to kick it old school with your gin consumption, there’s the Classic Dry, with rich juniper and vibrant citrus aromas, which you can turn pink with a splash of Fitch & Leedes Pink Tonic.

The range is rounded out by a Cape classic, the Rooibos Red, infused with organic rooibos sourced from the Cedarburg mountains.

We won’t judge you if you stick with the Pink Lady, though – hope you rack up the likes.
