Cold beer is one of life’s small pleasures, especially after a long day.

For the people of Mexico City, however, grabbing a cold six-pack on the way home might get a lot harder.

According to INSIDER, a Mexico City lawmaker has introduced a motion to ban the sale of cold beer at convenience stores.

The idea is to stop public and underage drinking by making beer something that isn’t available for immediate consumption.

Politician Lourdes Paz Reyes proposed the ban on Wednesday as part of an initiative to reduce public and underage drinking, parliament documents show.

The motion aims to limit the amount of alcoholic beverages that are “available for optimal and immediate consumption.” That means that it would prohibit convenience stores from selling refrigerated beers or other drinks with 7% or less in alcohol content.

Needless to say, people are not happy about it.

A motion to ban the sale of cold beer in Mexico City’s convenience stores has sparked a backlash across the country, with social media users exclaiming #Don’tMessWithOurBeer (#ConLasCervezasNo).

…”The brilliant deputies of the Morena party are worried about cold beers for immediate consumption instead of worrying about the insecurity in our country,” one user tweeted.

Another person said warm beer would not stop him from drinking: “I don’t even stop drinking beer when I have gout.”

“To reduce obesity, we should sell cold tacos,” one Twitter user joked.

In other words, don’t mess with people and their cold ales.

Unlike the citizens of Mexico City, South Africans have the freedom to down a cold Mexican Cerveza without weird temperature laws getting in the way.

Sol Beer, for example, is the authentic Mexican beer and believes in  Espiritu Libre – the spirit of freedom – as in the freedom to crack open a cold one whenever the mood strikes you.

Legend has it that Sol was first concocted in a brewery near Pico de Orizaba, the highest peak in Mexico.

The brewer created a light, refreshing beer made from the water closest to the sun and, as the brewer held up the beer, a ray of sun peeped through a hole in the roof onto the transparent bottle.

You don’t need a history lesson to know that it’s best enjoyed cold, whilst soaking up the sun, with some good friends.
