What is it with footballers and terrible statues?
David Beckham (even though it was a prank), Mo Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo, and now we can add that dashing man above, the one and only George Best.
For those unfamiliar with Northern Ireland’s Best, the notorious rabble-rouser is perhaps most famous for his now iconic quote, “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered”.
Glorious.
To celebrate what would have been his 73rd birthday, a statue was unveiled outside Windsor Park stadium, in Best’s home town of Belfast.
It was, umm, not well received. Here’s Sky News:
The statue, which captures Best dribbling with the ball, was unveiled by his sister Barbara McNarry and Northern Ireland teammate Pat Jennings.
It was created by a Belfast sculptor and funded by fans through public donations.
Speaking at the unveiling event, Mrs McNarry described the occasion as “momentous and emotional”.
Shall we do a side by side?
What a beautiful mop of hair.
Let’s get closer:
Oh dear.
It’s been compared to Game of Thrones character the Night King (don’t really see it, but OK), as well as Narnia’s Mr Tumnus.
Here he is:
Not spot on, but I see where the comparison comes from.
The Belfast sculptor responsible for the statue, Tony Currie, said he was happy with the statue.
“Anybody that’s important – his family and his fans – they’ve all agreed that it’s his likeness and that’s enough for me,” he said.
Tony, as long as the people that matter are satisfied, so are we.
