Critics have been raving about the latest offering from Quentin Tarantino – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

For the trailer and one of those rave reviews, go here.

The film has gone to Cannes, where a press conference was held inviting reporters to speak to the cast and director about it.

Everything was going swimmingly until Quentin Tarantino was asked why his most significant female character had so few lines.

The Sydney Morning Herald has more:

Australian actress Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate, the actress married to Roman Polanski who was murdered by the Manson “family”. In his film she is luminously alive, but says almost nothing.

From 10 seconds below, you can see the question and testy response:

    Hypothesis rejected.

Tarantino also refused to discuss a scene in which several women are dispatched in the sort of gory bloodbath of which he is the recognised master, saying that he couldn’t comment without spoiling the story. On that occasion, he just moved on.

The only time he was interested in talking about “girls” was when the subject of Charles Manson came up.

Fifty years later, their story is still the subject of a steady stream of books and television specials, Tarantino observed. “I think we’re fascinated by the Manson family story because at the end of the day, how he got these young girls and even boys to submit to him seems almost unfathomable,” he said.

He researched it extensively without feeling he was any closer to understanding it. “It actually gets more obscure the more you know.”

The movie hits cinemas around the world on August 14.
