Back in November 2017, Christopher Panayiotou was found guilty of orchestrating the 2015 murder of his wife, Jayde Panayiotou, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The men he hired to murder Jayde, Sinethemba Nenembe and Zolani Sibeko, received life for murder and an additional 15 years for robbery, and 15 years for conspiracy to commit murder, respectively.
We covered this one extensively – you can see all of that here.
Ever since his sentencing, Panayiotou has tried desperately to appeal his sentence. Reporting below via News24:
[He had] no luck after being denied leave to appeal by the Port Elizabeth High Court.
Similarly, when he appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) in Bloemfontein directly, he was also met with rejection. The SCA believed that an appeal would have no reasonable chance of success.
Panayiotou has now turned to the Constitutional Court.
On Monday, his attorney, Alwyn Griebenow, told News24 that papers had been lodged with the Constitutional Court some time ago, but did not specify the date.
He said that the State had given notice on June 7 that they would be opposing the application.
Much like convicted axe murderer Henri van Breda, he’s throwing his Hail Mary pass in ConCourt.
In response to the papers being lodged, the State has 15 days to file their answering papers. Once that has been done, Griebenow and the rest of Panayiotou’s legal team will reply, and from that point, they must then wait to hear whether the ConCourt will hear the application.
Griebenow says that his team’s argument is “substantive”. Hmm, I sure would love to know how they’ll argue away that hidden camera footage from the police sting operation, or the rest of the mountains of evidence against him.
