  • The Chilling Charlize Theron ‘SA Men’ Ad That Was Banned In 1999 [Video]

Yesterday, an estimated 10 000 people gathered outside Parliament in Cape Town to protest gender-based violence in South Africa.

Adding her voice to the protest, Charlize Theron weighed in on Twitter and shared a tweet by local artist Lady Skollie, featuring an ad that Theron shot in 1999.

The ad, which was banned shortly after it aired, draws attention to the high rates of rape in SA.

    Here’s Channel24:

Charlize, who made headlines in 1999 with a banned ad about rape, has now 20 years later shared the ad again saying: “When I made this ad in 1999 I hoped things would change. They have not. Rape and femicide are still a huge epidemics in South Africa and clearly the system has failed women. Our leaders can’t continue to turn a blind eye, as they did with this ad.”

She also sent a message to the men of South Africa:

You can watch the ad here:

As we wrote in yesterday’s story, South Africa has been labelled the “rape capital of the world” due to the high number of reported rapes every year.

In this sense, Theron’s advert remains unsettlingly relevant.
