    Well, kinda.

Late last week, Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden announced the birth of their baby girl, Raddix Madden.

Not up there with the strangest celeb baby names going around (this list does the trick), but you’re probably going to spend your life explaining it to people at least twice before the penny drops.

People immediately began speculating what the name meant, or where it was derived from, which led to VICE launching an investigation of their own.

You won’t find ‘Raddix’ in the English dictionary, but it does feature elsewhere:

A self-described “EDM and trap singer” based in San Antonio, Texas.

An insurance company based in South Africa.

A character in Bruce Merchant’s self-published fiction book called Moonkind: Survivors of Ebola.

I wonder if our local insurance company, Raddix, has seen an influx of traffic these past few days?

It seems rather unlikely that the company was the inspiration behind the name, which may actually stem from the word ‘radix’:

Derived from the Latin word for “root,” a radix is the base in a numerical system, according to both Dictionary.com and Merriam Webster…

Radix can also be used to mean the primary source of something: a root both literally and figuratively. The latter kinda makes sense for a first child!

    Sure, I guess.

What was the real reason they went with Raddix? We may never know, but we must soldier on nonetheless.
