Some stories really give you a feeling of being punched in the gut, and this is one of those.
Over the weekend, a video emerged showing the aftermath of an accident at the top of the Houwhoek Pass, near Grabouw, when a car collided with a petrol tanker.
The collision occurred on Saturday, reports the Citizen, but it is what happened immediately after the accident that is so tough to watch.
According to the driver of the truck, the car, carrying two passengers, swerved into the path of the tanker before the collision. It then tumbled down an embankment where one occupant, a woman, died from injuries on the scene.
The second occupant, a man, was then seen to run towards the burning tanker and lie down in the flames, where he was found dead by emergency responders
A warning that this video is extremely difficult to watch:
If you are on the mobile site, the video may not load – you can see the Facebook post here.
The identities of those involved have not been made public:
Emergency Medical Rescue (EMR) were at the scene, and confirmed that a man and a woman were involved in the crash…
“A death inquest and culpable homicide has been opened for investigation after an accident that occurred yesterday [Saturday] on the N2, Grabouw,” Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said.
There were fears that the car involved in the collision also had a child inside, as a child seat was found, but this was ruled out following an extensive search.
The N2 was closed for roughly four hours following the crash.
