You have to love a four-day week.

Yes indeed, it’s Thursday, and thus time to reminisce about days of old.

Today, we’re casting an eye back on one of the Currie Cup’s greatest ever tackles.

I refer to the act of tackling, rather than what Bryan Baenhoff was letting all hang out, during the 1991 Currie Cup match between Orange Free State and Western Province.

In the final game of the league season, the men in the blue and white hoops needed to beat the blokes from Bloemfontein in order to book a place in the final against Transvaal.

Enter Bryan, wearing only socks, and his textbook takedown of WP lock FC Smit. An added bonus is the sultry tones of Hugh Bladen on the microphone:

    Take notes, Owen Farrell.

This tackle is all the more famous because Orange Free State went on to win 24-18, denying Province a place in the final.

Instead, they took part in a three-way playoff with Northern Transvaal and Orange Free State, with Northern Transvaal qualifying, and emerging victorious over Transvaal in the final.

It is rumoured that Bryan Baenhoff is still to pay for a drink in Bloemfontein since the incident, and he should also be golden in Pretoria, given the tournament’s eventual outcome.
