There’s nothing quite like those ‘I’m deleting my Facebook account’ posts you see on the feed, followed by a few days of silence, and then the person is posting once more.

Cool story, bro, and better luck next time, because we should all be reconsidering our relationship with social media.

By this stage, I’m sure we’re all aware of how harmful these platforms can be to one’s mental health, as well as democracy as a whole (the Cambridge Analytica scandal, for example).

The full extent of how what we search, share, and like shapes our worldview is once again in the spotlight with Netflix’s new doccie, The Social Dilemma, due for release on September 9.

If you were on the fence about quitting Facebook before, maybe this is the final nail in the coffin. Below via IndieWire:

[It] promises an in-depth — and thoroughly harrowing — look at how social media platforms and algorithms manipulate individuals and contribute to issues such as viral conspiracy theories, teenage mental health issues, rampant misinformation, and political polarization.

The doccie was a hit at Sundance earlier in the year, with reviews saying it presents a “compelling argument for viewers to begin thinking about their social media usage differently”.

    Here’s the trailer:

Again, the release date is September 9.

If you do quit Facebook, more power to you.
