At around 6AM this morning, paramedics and police officers arrived at the scene of an accident on Durban’s M19 highway, headed towards Pinetown.
The stretch of highway is notorious for a high number of accidents, and as paramedics and police attended to the first car, which had rolled down an embankment and come to rest in a fast-flowing river, a second car lost control.
Tragically, that car crashed into the police vehicle that was on the scene, with an officer sustaining serious injuries.
KwaZulu-Natal emergency services spokesperson Robert McKenzie told News24 that paramedics were attending to the officer.
In the video below, you can see the legs of the man involved in the original crash protruding from the back of his vehicle, which has come to rest in the river.
Here’s McKenzie once more:
“Rescuers made their way down to the vehicle and found that a [man] believed to be in his 30s had sustained moderate injuries. He was stabilised on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.”
Hopefully, the police officer involved in the second crash makes a full recovery from his injuries.
