You’re looking at a set of chopsticks.

These aren’t just any chopsticks, though.

They’re South African Airways (SAA) in-flight chopsticks, which, judging by the current financial state of our national carrier, were probably procured at a price miles above the market rate.

If you’re a fan, you can snap up 32 000 of these chopsticks on auction, and ensure that you never again suffer the shame of eating sushi with a fork.

WH Auctioneers are handling the flogging of the SAA inflight services stock. Before we single out a few items, this via News24:

Apparently it is excess stock on sale, some of which has expiry dates coming up. The stock includes alcohol (premium wine, gin, whiskey and brandy), soft drinks, premium brand crew luggage, and raincoats…

A refundable deposit of R25,000 and FICA documents are required to register to take part in the auction. Bidding closes on Thursday 26 November from 10.30am.

There are a total of 540 000 toothpicks up for grabs, as well as 184 000 oven bags, along with 8 000 earplugs.

How about some Flosser Enhanced Amenities? I guess they make flossing easier?

Only 3 000 of those up for grabs, so best get in there.

Then there are all the tea and coffee titbits:

If you’re paranoid that we may yet return to an alert level where the sale of alcohol is banned, you may want to raid the SAA liquor cabinet.

There’s beer (just the 6 456 cases), brandy, gin, vodka, whiskey, Amarula, wine, and a few other party ales, along with an assortment of mixers.

    Branded pen – 1 000.

    Slippers – now we’re talking:

There are 7 900 of those slippers up for grabs.

You could wear a new pair every day for more than 21 years before you run out, by which point we should hopefully have a handle on COVID-19.

Let’s call it a day there.

If you want to rummage around in the SAA locker, you can find the full auction list here.

Maybe, if things go well, SAA could redistribute some of that bailout business rescue money back to the departments it was taken from.
