It’s not entirely clear why the American Music Awards (AMAs) thought it would be a good idea to celebrate on a stage, live, on Sunday night, with many artists and an audience in attendance at the Los Angeles Microsoft Theatre.

Sure, COVID-19 restrictions were in place, with a limited audience and testing before anyone could enter the building, but considering America’s appalling response to the pandemic, with more than a million new cases of COVID-19 in the past seven days, it didn’t set a very good example.

For the most part, awards shows, such as the MTV Music Video Awards, have happened online since the pandemic struck.

Anyway, it’s Monday, so let’s leave the gloom and doom behind for a second and enjoy some of the highlights of the show via Entertainment Tonight, before we take in the full list of winners.

From Justin Bieber’s soulful medley of new hits – which came 10 years after he made his AMAs debut with a performance of “Pray” – to Jennifer Lopez and Maluma’s world premiere performance of “Pa’ Ti” and “Lonely,” the night was jam-packed with incredible highlights.

Five of the best, starting with:

Justin Bieber’s live performance of ‘Lonely’ and ‘Holy’:

The Weeknd performs ‘Save Your Tears’ looking like he just underwent cosmetic surgery:

Yes, that was Kenny G.

Meghan Thee Stallion performing ‘Body’:

Jennifer Lopez and Maluma debuted their new music:

Finally, BTS closed the show with a bang:

Without further ado, here are this year’s major winners, rattled off in video form to spice things up a little:

Taylor Swift went into the show with 29 AMA wins, the most of all time, and then broke her own record and upped her tally to 32, including the coveted ‘Favourite Artist Award’.
