Who’s up for a visit to the UK, then?

You don’t want to spend your time converting from pounds to rands every time you buy something, because it’s not pretty, and that’s after you’ve forked out a solid £1 500 or so (around R31 000) for quarantine.

British residents returning home from South Africa will have to spend 10 days self-isolating in a government-approved hotel, with meals served in their rooms. which will be supervised by private security guards.

    More from The Telegraph:

The Cabinet’s Covid operations committee was expected to back away from imposing the requirement for quarantine hotels on all returning Britons and instead limit it to the 30 “high risk” countries currently covered by a travel ban for foreigners…

The moves come on top of rules requiring all travellers to have negative Covid test results from within 72 hours of departure and to quarantine. All passengers’ test certificates and locator forms are now being checked on arrival, leading to queues at Heathrow.

That list of 30 “high risk” countries could well grow shortly, as there are 22 other countries – including the likes of Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Italy, and France – where the so-called Brazilian and South Africa variants have been identified.

Some UK ministers are said to be pushing for full border closures, like Australia.

As things stand, the UK travel ban on South Africans extends to at least February 15.

The US has now joined in the fun, too, with new travel restrictions, barring entry to any person who has travelled through or from South Africa, coming into effect this Saturday (January 30).

To finish, here’s a look at what that R30 000-odd is going to get you in a quarantine hotel:
