That’s Isabel dos Santos above, sandwiched between Nicole Scherzinger and Paris Hilton, back in 2018.
At one stage, Forbes declared dos Santos, the daughter of Angola’s longtime former president, the richest woman in Africa, worth an estimated $3,5 billion.
However, back in January, Forbes removed dos Santos from the 2021 list of Africa’s richest people, after her assets were frozen by Angolan authorities, who then charged her with embezzlement and money laundering.
In total, three different countries have frozen her assets, with a lawsuit claiming hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid debt ongoing in a fourth country.
Forbes removed her from the list on the basis that she will likely never win back control of the frozen assets, and have detailed her story in an excellent article released last month.
It’s long, and goes into great detail, so if that’s your thing then get reading here.
Whilst she is reported to still be living a rather lavish lifestyle, due to assets that authorities haven’t tracked, once court proceedings are concluded, she is likely to be legally broke.
As for those hidden assets, we may never know, and Angolans will tell you that she has stashed away more than enough loot to be alright.
Still, as Forbes illustrates in four minutes flat, here’s ‘How Africa’s Richest Woman Isabel Dos Santos Went Broke’:
