We’ve had a few months of glorious silence since Donald Trump was banned from Twitter and Facebook (currently under review).
But where there’s a will there’s a way, and now that he doesn’t have political rallies and social media platforms to fuel his ego, he’s striking out on his own.
The former president has launched a website on his personal domain called ‘From the Desk of Donald J. Trump‘ that looks like an attempt to imitate the ‘fun’ and ‘engagement’ of Twitter – except it doesn’t.
To announce the launch of the site, there’s a video (of course there is) and it’s exactly what you would expect it to be:
“In a time of silence and lies, a beacon of freedom arises”.
Sure.
As VICE points out, removed from the greater “ecosystem, Trump’s tweets – and that’s what these are, they’re tweets – feel highly bizarre, even for Trump”.
He was the most powerful person on the planet. Now he’s direct-blogging to a personal website that has buttons so you can share his thoughts on Twitter or Facebook. If you click the heart, it lights up but doesn’t do anything. Interested parties can sign up to have these tweets launched directly into their inbox.
As for the content of his posts, it’s much of the same:
No followers, no replies, no likes, no retweets, and no engagement. Just Trump shouting into the void.
Fans of the former US President can also head on over to the online shop where you’ll find merchandise like lawn signs and a “Freedom Hat” – whatever that is.
The Trump reusable straw is a weird choice. Trump hasn’t shown much interest in climate change. I reckon that wasn’t his idea.
It has that right-wing flair that’s likely to impress anyone who still believes that the election was stolen and other conspiracy theories that we’re not going to go into here.
It’s all a little SAD.
