Do you fancy yourself as Marie Antoinette or Victorian royal adjacent?
Well, there’s a fairytale spot for you in Clwyd, Wales.
It does, however, come with a catch and a hefty asking price, no matter how “attractive” they say it is.
There’s an opportunity to make the ‘Welsh Versailles’ your project.
This 122-room mansion, formally known as Kinmel Hall, has been derelict since 1999, and is now up for auction at the starting price of £750 000 (around R14,7 million).
Tassled at the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, this grand house has a distinct Palace of Versailles feel.
The only thing is, it needs some deep TLC, hence that “attractive asking price”.
The mansion was built in 1874:

At 80 000 square feet, along with the 122 rooms, it has 365 windows, 12 entrances, and a whole lot of garden.
The Versailles feel is definitely a thing as it was modelled after the French royals’ home and designed by renowned Victorian architect William E. Nesfield.

Like a cake!
Per The Telegraph, it was built as a private home for the Hughes copper mining family in 1874, until 1929, when it was used as a hospital during the Second World War, and later as a school.
The garden, which takes up most of the property, was designed by the architect’s father, William A. Nesfield, who laid out Regent’s Park and St James’ Park.

Besides a massive garden, the house also comes with towering ceilings in formal rooms, a former chapel, a huge staircase, and a large stable block.

The house is sure to be a massive project for anyone willing to take it on.
As Gary Murphy, from the auctioneer Allsop said:
“The attractive asking price reflects the fact that in its current state, it requires substantial restoration and refurbishment to help bring it back to its former glory. Subject to obtaining all necessary consents, it could be used as a hotel, an education establishment or residential units, offering uninterrupted views over neighbouring countryside and a wealth of heritage.”
All good ideas, Gary.
Bidding on the property at Allsop’s residential auction will take place on May 13.
