Having made the tormented male protagonist role into an artform over the years, Paul Schrader is proving his point with his latest movie, The Card Counter.
Following on from Schrader’s screenwriting Oscar nomination for First Reformed, this new revenge drama is highly anticipated.
With Martin Scorsese on board as the producer, the stellar cast also lends a few favours.
The Card Counter features Golden Globe nominee Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) and Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man).
Per IndieWire, The Card Counter will premiere in September at the 2021 Venice Film Festival.
Selected for the festival’s competition section, it will compete for prizes such as the Golden Lion, the highest honour achievable, against Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, Pablo Larrain’s Spencer, and Pedro Almodovar’s Parallel Mothers, among others.
