Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, Madres Paralelas, stars Penelope Cruz (both are pictured above).

Translated, that means ‘Parallel Mothers’.

It is about a single, middle-aged mother (Cruz) and a single, teenage mother (Milena Smit) bonding after giving birth in the same hospital, on the same day, despite their differing views towards motherhood.

The official poster for the film has come under fire on Instagram recently for featuring what appears to be a lactating female nipple.

As you may well know, nipples (of the female kind anyway) are banned on the platform.

Instagram consequently removed the poster “for breaking our rules against nudity”, according to a Facebook statement, reports Metro.

The poster’s Spanish designer, Javier Jaén, was having none of it and complained of censorship.

Instagram later reinstated the poster and apologised:

“We do, however, make exceptions to allow nudity in certain circumstances, which includes when there’s clear artistic context.

“We’ve therefore restored posts sharing the Almodóvar movie poster to Instagram, and we’re really sorry for any confusion caused.”

Here’s what all the fuss was about:

A post shared by Javier Jaén (@javier_jaen)

Jaén had considered that the poster may cause trouble on social media, but decided to stay true to his vision, and Almodóvar was happy to back him up.

Jaén said:

“This is probably the first image I saw when I was born. A company like Instagram tells me my work is dangerous, that people shouldn’t see it, that it’s pornographic. How many people are they telling that their body is bad, that their body is dangerous?”

Jaén added: “They say their technology can’t differentiate the context. I don’t care. Change your technology then.”

It’s high time Facebook, which owns Instagram, gets with the times.

Before you go, here’s the trailer for Madres Paralelas, as promised:
