If your car had a tape or CD player in the mid to late 1990s, there’s a very good chance you had Jagged Little Pill on the go.

Alanis Morissette’s most famous album contains a number of songs that are still well-known to this day, including ‘You Oughta Know’, ‘Hand in My Pocket’, ‘Head over Feet’, and ‘Ironic’.

Rain on your wedding day, and all that.

Alanis has come a long way since then, and her life and success since she became a household name is the subject of a new HBO documentary.

    Titled Jagged, here’s a brief write-up:

[It takes] viewers to 1995, when a 21-year-old Alanis Morissette burst onto the music scene with the first single off her ground-breaking album, “Jagged Little Pill.”

With a rawness and emotional honesty that resonated with millions, and despite a commercial landscape that preferred its rock stars to be male, she took radio and MTV by storm and the album went on to sell 33 million copies.

The documentary will be released on HBO from November 18, with the trailer dropping yesterday:

Hers is certainly a story worth telling, although Alanis has been very vocal in recent months regarding her opposition to the doccie.

    This via NME:

Morissette spoke out against the release of Jagged back in September, rescinding her support for the film after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. She said the film – which includes an eye-opening interview with the singer-songwriter – contains “implications and facts that are simply not true”.

She accused the team behind the documentary of having a “salacious agenda”, saying she “was lulled into a false sense of security” and telling her fans: “This was not the story I agreed to tell. I sit here now experiencing the full impact of having trusted someone who did not warrant being trusted.”

It’s unclear which parts of the doccie she is most unhappy with.

In Jagged, Morissette makes multiple allegations of statutory rape, saying men engaged in sex with her when she was a 15-year-old pop star in Canada.

She hasn’t commented further but made a point of staying away from the premiere, issuing her statement just hours before the documentary aired in Toronto.
