Model and artist Ivy Getty, the great-granddaughter of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, didn’t even look at Pinterest for wedding inspiration.
All she needed was her memories of her late grandmother Ann Getty, the wife of Gordon Getty.
She met photographer Tobias Engel at Paris Fashion Week, where they hit it off. He later set up an incredibly romantic engagement dinner, complete with candles, an ocean view, and a ring with all the sentimentality that Ivy adores.
He did well to include some diamonds from a necklace given to Ivy by her grandmother when she was younger, all set around a sapphire engagement ring on a yellow gold band.
Behold:
The wedding took place at City Hall in San Francisco on Saturday, with Ivy wearing an “incredibly personal” John Galliano for Maison Margiela Haute Couture gown covered in mirror shards that reflect all that she is worth.
No, really. Look closely into each “mirror shard” as Vogue described it, and you will see all the opulence around her reflected back:
The newlyweds, everyone:
PEOPLE notes that the 26-year-old grew up in the family’s San Francisco mansion, mostly raised by her grandmother, and remembers always seeing her wearing Galliano’s designs:
“After my grandmother’s passing — she was really more like a mother to me — I felt this connection to John. I knew I wanted him to create the dress for my wedding. My aunt Vanessa, who I am very close to, was connected to him through a friend, and here we are,” Ivy told Vogue.
…”The entire process was incredibly personal, which allowed us to get even closer. The feelings [that came along with] creating my wedding dress never got old, I am still pinching myself.”
Unfortunately, Ivy’s grandmother, as well as her father, died in 2020. Thus, the sentimentality of the wedding had some extra weight:
“Not physically having two of the most important people in my life with me on my wedding day is extremely hard, but through John’s vision and creativity, he was easily able to bring their presence to life,” Ivy said.
…The bride also wore a custom embroidered veil designed by Galliano that “embodies the people and moments that got me to this day,” featuring walnuts that represented her grandmother who “grew up on a walnut farm” and guitars to honour her father, John Gilbert Getty who died in 2020 at age 52, who was a musician.
The wedding was officiated by US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and the guest list was as star-studded as Ivy’s dress.
Actor Anya Taylor-Joy was the maid of honour, with singer Olivia Rodrigo and California Governor Gavin Newsom being among the attendees, to name a few:
All the bridesmaids were also dressed in Galliano-designed dusty grey gowns for Maison Margiela Haute Couture:
Even Ivy’s pet chihuahua, Blue, was dressed up to deliver the wedding rings.
CNN has more:
Among the festivities was a British Invasion Mod Party held Thursday night at The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco (where party-goers were reportedly required to show Covid-19 vaccination cards). Event planner Stanlee Gatti transformed the space into a silvery nightclub with 1968 sci-fi film “Barbarella” in mind. Donning ’60s hallmarks such as go-go boots, sequins and big hair, guests danced the night away to music DJed by Mark Ronson and performances by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Here’s Ivy and her maid of honour dancing to Earth, Wind & Fire at the Mod Party:
The happy couple, again:
Hey, you know what they say: if it sparks joy, it is a keeper.
