This story shows the full range of what people are capable of.
41-year-old Abrie Geldenhuys took a tumble last Friday while walking in Pretoria Moot, an area north of central Pretoria.
He ended up falling into a stormwater channel, with the incident captured on CCTV footage.
Geldenhuys is blind, with just 1% sight in his right eye and 2% in his left.
He told the Pretoria Rekord that he was headed to a local restaurant when he slipped and fell.
As you can see from the footage, a passerby stopped his car and offered immediate assistance, helping Geldenhuys back to the road:
Geldenhuys said he was fortunate to not sustain any serious injury, ending up with “just a few bruises on my knee and back”.
It’s heartwarming to see how promptly the man came to Geldenhuys’ assistance, but sadly that’s not where the story ends.
This from The Citizen:
He said he was not familiar with the area, having been housesitting over the weekend.
…while he was making his way back to the home he was looking after, two unknown men stopped Geldenhuys and asked if they could assist him.
Knowing he was blind, Geldenhuys says one of the men then unzipped his backpack and stole his phone and his wallet.
Due to the fall, he was too confused to fight back.
He did have a second phone in his pocket, which he used to call for help, but there is no footage of the robbery.
Geldenhuys has now applied for a guide dog, and the Tshwane metro says it is “committed to erecting visible barricades, to prevent future incidents”.
Somewhere out there are two men who we can only hope have some awful karma coming their way.
