Parts of Italy experienced extreme weather from Tuesday into Wednesday.

The severe storm brought torrential rainfall, violent winds, an impressive waterspout, and even a tornado to the Italian coast of Sicily, killing one man.

The 53-year-old living near the city of Modica was reportedly trying to fix a broken shutter that had been damaged by the extreme winds when he was killed.

Meanwhile, residents in Licata shared videos of multiple waterspouts forming over the sea, which is a rotating column of cloud-filled wind that forms over water before becoming a tornado on land, the BBC reported.

AOL has more about the crazy weather:

Hail up to the size of golf balls pummeled the ground across western portions of Sicily on Tuesday while heavy rain fell elsewhere. In addition, an imposing waterspout spun to life off the coast of Sicily…

Amidst the heavy rains and strong winds, the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian agency for fire and rescue services, responded to more than 230 calls for help from Tuesday to Wednesday. The calls ranged from water rescues to downed trees and power lines.

Meteorologists said that the violent weather was driven by a long-lived storm, which had “circulated across the region for over a week, bringing persistent rainfall and thunderstorms to Sicily, western Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, and the southern coastline of France”.

Just under a month ago, the region was hit by what is known as a “medicane”, which combines the two words ‘Mediterranean’ and ‘hurricane.’

Meteorologist Alyssa Smithmyer says that the storm should pass through to Greece over the weekend, leaving Sicily to settle.
