Not many local winemakers can boast of having a wine portfolio packed with five-star ratings and a Wine of the Year award.

But our favourite spot in the Franschhoek Winelands can.

Anthonij Rupert Wyne has achieved record highs with a lengthy list of wine awards and accolades on the table, which More Than Food Mag notes just “reaffirm the team’s commitment to quality”.

The internationally recognised Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2022 has awarded Anthonij Rupert Wyne with four five-star ratings and 14 four-and-a-half-star ratings for wines in their impressive portfolio, as well as a Semillon of the Year award.

Let’s take a look at the excellent track record so far:

This is the third consecutive year in which the Cape of Good Hope Wine Laing Groendruif has been awarded the title of Semillon of the Year:

It’s also the third year running in which both the Laing Groendruif and Cabernet Franc receive a full five stars, this time for the 2020 and 2015 vintages respectively.

This extraordinary textural Laing Groendruif is prized for having a long rich finish after a vibrant zestiness and goes for R125 a bottle.

Laing Groendruif’s special Semillon grapes are sourced from Henk Laing’s farm, Trekpoort, which is on the Skurfberg mountains near Clanwilliam.

The Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Franc 2014 also scores a five-star rating and retails for R610 a bottle:

This bold wine is described as being beautifully smooth and refined, with a well-knit oak and dancing fruits on the palate before a long, rewarding finish.

Also shining in the five-star spotlight this year is the Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2020 and L’Ormarins Vintage Brut Rosé 2016.

The Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is just as good, retailing at R140 a bottle:

The Altima vineyard is situated in a pristine valley north of Villiersdorp, surrounded by a steep mountain range. This provides the perfect place for wines with high natural acidity and upfront aromas.

As for the award-winning L’Ormarins Vintage Brut Rosé 2016, which is also the recipient of the SA Woman Wine & Spirits Award, it is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay:

The steam of bubbles carries hints of cherry and strawberry as it mingles with baked bread and biscuit – only R190 a pop.

It’s never a bad idea to make sure you’re stocked up on the good stuff ahead of the festive season.

We may well need it to make it through this December.
