The days of watching a crummy quality, pixelated download of a movie your friend gave you on a flash drive should be long gone.

    You’re better than that.

I want high-def 4K streaming, without any lag, and the ability to use my phone at the same time because I have the attention span of a goldfish.

MyBroadband recently did a comparison of the cheapest home fibre options for streaming 4K in South Africa. Netflix recommends a 25Mbps download speed for 4K streaming, but you can often get away with around 16Mbps to 20Mbps.

The basis of their comparison looks at entry-level home fibre packages offered by six of the country’s biggest Internet Service Providers (ISPs), with speeds ranging from 20Mbps to 35Mbps:

MWEB was the cheapest ISP on four out of the five networks and the third cheapest on the remaining network — Frogfoot.

RSAWEB was the second-cheapest for three FNOs and the third-cheapest on Vumatel’s network…

You can see the full tables of comparison here.

Importantly, MyBroadband did not include any temporary promotional pricing in their comparison.

We’ve looked at what RSAWEB, which was the top-ranked ISP in South Africa during Q3 last year, is currently offering.

Their summer fibre sale has starting prices greatly reduced.

An uncapped 35Mbps line through Octotel is just R385 and an uncapped 25Mbps through Openserve is R495 a month.

You’ll also save money on installation, a router, mobile data, and more.

If you’ve had the same ISP for years now, it really is worth checking what you’re paying and what speed you’re getting because promotions like these can save you in the long run.

Until then, may all your streaming be high-def only.
