The subject of the Netflix series, Inventing Anna, Anna Sorokin (her real name, although she went by Anna Delvey) has served roughly four years in prison for conning hundreds of thousands of dollars from A-list friends, big banks, and swanky hotels.

She did all that by pretending to be a German heiress worth $60 million, which she recently said is an amount that is actually “borderline poor in New York”.

Sorokin, who was convicted of one count of attempted grand larceny, three counts of grand larceny, and four counts of theft services in 2019, is still denying being a con artist and remains adamant that pretending to have a $60 million trust fund was nothing, really.

    Here’s more via Deseret News:

“I never was doing anything so super-crazy. There’s people spending way more money than I did. People assumed I was trying to impress anybody, but 40, 50, 60 million … that’s borderline poor in New York. There’s so many rich people there, you can’t even impress anybody.”

“I do see what I did wrong,” she concluded. “But so many people are doing worse things.”

Well, despite whatever version of unreality Sorokin decides to land in, New York is trying to push her out for good.

The 31-year-old has been in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention at a New York facility, fighting against being deported to Germany since overstaying her visa.

Bustle reported on this “twist in her legal tale”:

…the fake heiress’s attorneys confirmed as much, saying they were unable to get in touch with her, causing something of a panic. The Daily Mail has since reported that she remains detained in upstate New York, citing essentially a clerical error for the mix-up.

You can just hear her saying “I don’t have time for this, I don’t have time for YOU” right now:

What we do know is that the ICE’s decision reportedly made Sorokin – who has filed several appeals to remain in the United States – “furious”. In an essay penned for Insider, Sorokin described the ICE’s decision-making process as “baffling.”

Obviously, Sorokin is fighting this with all she has (which is not much now):

“They told her that her visa had expired, but, instead of being deported, Anna — being Anna — said, ‘I’m going to fight this,’” Neffatari Davis, Sorokin’s best friend who is a major character in “Inventing Anna,” told the New York Post last month.

“She thought it would be a quick fight. I think if she was a plain Jane and not in the media, she would have just been deported.”

Immigration authorities had even booked her flight to Germany and packed her belongings, “like they’re throwing you out as trash,” Sorkin’s immigration lawyer, Audrey Thomas said.

Thomas has consequently filed an emergency stay against the deportation, which means Sorokin gets to remain in New York for a while longer.

For more Anna content, there’s a new podcast episode on Call Her Daddy featuring an interview with Sorokin and Alex Cooper, who said that interviewing Anna has been “one of the hardest challenges in [her] career”.
