My local neighbourhood Facebook group often features tales of woe regarding the disappearance of a rubbish bin or two.

Perhaps there’s a lucrative resale market I don’t know about.

I’ve yet to hear of anything like what took place last Thursday (May 5) in Constantia, though, with an unsuspecting couple robbed at gunpoint after being tricked by crooks posing as a bin-cleaning service.

According to News24, the couple was home with their domestic worker when the robbery occurred:

“The door was opened for a local refuse-bin cleaning service as they usually come to clean the dustbin on this day. The complainant questioned the number of workers on the property as they are usually only two or three workers at any given time. The workers alleged that they were new to the company and asked for cold water,” [Constable Zak Marais, the spokesperson for Diep River Police Station] says.

According to Marais, the complainant then went back inside the house to fetch two bottles of cold water.

The so-called “worker” then left only to return seconds later with others dressed in masks, green overalls and armed with a firearm, which was pointed at the complainant.

At this point, the complainant screamed for help but her husband was in the shower at the time.

The couple, along with the domestic worker, was tied up and the robbers made off with cash, cellphones, and other items.

The robbery took place in Petricia Road, which some might argue is more ‘Plumstantia’ than Constantia. I’ll leave the semantics to you.

You’d think it’s pretty unlikely that the crooks would return to the same area and use the same modus operandi, but it’s still worth being alert just in case.
