That door scene in the 1997 hit movie Titanic has always evoked heated internet debate.

The controversial scene shows Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack sinking into the ocean as his paramour Rose (Kate Winslet), lying sturdily on a massive door, whispers “I’ll never let you go, Jack”.

Yeah, right, Rose. You did let go – in fact, you could’ve moved over – and now the internet is in a perpetual tizzy about it.

The debate might be settled once and for all, but you might not like the answer.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the movie Titanic, director James Cameron is using science to test the theory that Jack and Rose could both fit on the piece of wood after the ship sinks, per USA Today.

Stunt doubles, chosen because of their similar body types to the lovers from the film, recreated the scene in a New Zealand pool in studies overseen by University of Otago hypothermia expert James Cotter.

Even the water temperature was raised to really get the stunt doubles in the moment:

“Across four tests, we came to some pretty hard and fast conclusions,” [Cameron] added, without revealing the results.

Although, it might be safe to say that his conclusion is basically that Jack simply must die. So really, the debate is worthless.

Plus, there’s another loop in the debate:

“A new investigation we’ve just done will settle this fan-based question about Jack and Rose and a piece of floating debris, which everyone calls a door,” Cameron told a Television Critics Association panel Friday.

“It’s, technically, not a door,” Cameron said. “it’s a piece of wood paneling from the first- class cabin.”

Watch a snippet from the special via CNN:

You could say that Cameron, who will give the rest of the fan theory “a forensic investigation” in the documentary, blew the door off that one.

    I prefer MythBuster’s rendition:

The National Geographic special Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron will premiere on February 5 and the original Titanic will be in theatres again from February 14.
