Cape Town’s inaugural Formula E race is around the corner.

The exciting 2,8-kilometre road race around Cape Town Stadium is set to take place on February 24-25, a two-day event with shakedowns and hot laps to boot.

It is estimated to swell the local economy by R2 billion, directly and indirectly, according to the City councillor JP Smith, with organisers saying it will be the city’s biggest event since the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The event is expecting 10 000 spectators from abroad, who will be totally riled up to spend and help SA’s tourism sector rejuvenate nicely post-COVID-19 pandemic.

With such high hopes for the event, it is reassuring to know that plans have been put in place to deal with all stages of load shedding.

TimesLIVE reported that Iain Banner, chair of the organising company e-Movement, said that the track was completed in just eight months, a third of the two years that had been predicted.

Considering all the toil that went into making the track happen, this was indeed done “in record time”:

A total of 2,100 concrete barriers measuring 7.86km in total were constructed as well as fencing, which required 487 tonnes of steel.

…They also built five bridges across the track, 17,000 of the 24,000 spectator seats and 11 garages for the racing teams that include Jaguar, Maserati, McLaren, Porsche and Nissan.

Since this is the “biggest event to happen in this precinct since staging the 2010 Fifa World Cup”, Banner has also assured that the area will get locked down completely.

He added that there are 16km of perimeter fencing, as well as track security to control the environment. There is also a transport plan with buses and Uber:

Smith said the race precinct would be exempt from load-shedding up to stage six. “We do occasionally exempt precincts. It’s too risky to have a major event in the dark where a disastrous security situation can occur.”

Apparently, the secondary system included generators running on biofuel, a new-generation hydrogen vegetable oil.
