The average human scalp contains about 100 000 hairs and we each lose roughly 100 hairs every day.

Apologies go out for our shower drain and the spot behind the couch getting clogged and bogged constantly with hairballs.

Each individual hair survives for an average of four years, and in its fifth year, the hair usually falls out to be replaced within six months by a new one.

So yeah, hair loss is normal, but for some, the shedding is hard and fast, resulting in awkward balding patches or all-out bareness.

Both men and women tend to lose hair thickness and amount as they age, but inherited or “pattern baldness” affects many more men than women.

About 5% of men begin to lose their hair by the time they are 30 years old and about two-thirds are either bald or have a balding pattern by age 60.

The question is then, what can be done to slow the process down and assist with hair loss?

Luckily, Skin Renewal has a multitude of phenomenal hair thinning and/or hair loss treatments that can help us keep our crowning glory, well, glorious.

Treatments that have yielded fantastic results for the treatment of thinning hair and hair loss include:

    • Carboxytherapy
    • Needling
    • PRP (platelet-rich plasma)
    • PDT with Growth Factors
    • Injectables such as Botox / Dysport for traction alopecia or hair loss where the culprit is tightness of the scalp

All of the above modalities increase blood flow and circulation in the scalp, which is crucial to promoting a healthy hair follicle. The increase in blood flow also brings important nutrients into the follicle while taking away harmful waste products such as DHT, which is responsible for decreased hair growth.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for hair loss is a successful treatment option where a small quantity of blood is taken from the patient to separate the growth factors and bioactive proteins in the blood (which initiate and speed up tissue repair and regeneration) to then have this platelet-rich plasma injected back into the scalp, to encourage hair growth.

A course of four to eight treatments is recommended as well as ongoing maintenance treatments every six months.

Although many of these treatments work quite well on their own, it is recommended to combine therapies and various treatment modalities with topicals and home care in order to support and maintain results.

These speciality hair products may be used in combination with clinical in-office treatments to enhance results:

    • Lamelle Research Laboratories’ Pelo Baum is a premium and comprehensive hair revitalising program that includes a Hair Revitalising Solution, shampoo, and a conditioner. From root to tip, you can experience significant improvement in the thickness and density of your hair.
    • Topical Minoxidil in either a 2% or 5% solution is most effective in persons with recent onset of hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia and relatively small areas of hair loss.

For more information on hair loss and these myriad ways to treat your crowning glory, head over to Skin Renewal.

The highly experienced doctors will be more than happy to help you keep your head on your shoulders and your hair on your head.
