SA’s Proud Moment, The Ben Affleck Meme, Chris Brown’s Freak Out – All The Highs & Lows From The 2023 Grammys

There's a lot to talk about from the 2023 Grammys, including Chris Brown's hissy fit, Ben Affleck's meme-like reactions, and a winning moment for South African musicians.

Our boy Trevor Noah kicked off hosting the 2023 Grammys on Sunday (February 5) with a comment about Prince Harry’s much-talked-about “frozen todger”.

In Harry’s memoir Spare, the prince shared some intimate details about his life, including how he once suffered from frostbite in his nether regions while on an arctic charity hike at the North Pole in 2011.

“James Corden is a 12-time Emmy winner and the host of The Late Late Show. He’s also living proof that a man can move from London to LA and not tell everyone about his frostbitten penis,” Noah quipped while introducing Corden as a presenter.

Noah is a huge fan of the Grammys, per News24, saying that “there’s no other room in the world where you get to walk through your Spotify playlists”.

We’ll have to take his word for it – ignoring Ben Affleck’s disinterested face for a moment – while pouring over all the reported highs and lows of the ceremony as if we wish we were there, too.

Yeah, well, Ben Affleck didn’t look all that chuffed to be at the Grammys, remaining completely expressionless as his wife Jennifer Lopez rocked out next to him.

As you may well expect, he became an instant meme all over Twitter per The Wrap:

Fun times? Fun times.

There was also another much-spoken-about face. That being Madonna’s “new” face:

Madonna appeared for a short moment at the 65th annual award show to introduce Sam Smith and Kim Petras:

“Here’s what I’ve learned after four decades in music,” she began in her speech. “If they call you shocking, scandalous, troublesome, problematic, provocative or dangerous, you’re definitely onto something.”

Plastic surgeon doctors have apparently said that she’s had a facelift, nose job and “pulled back” skin – among other injections.

Moving on to Chris Brown, who threw yet another hissy fit at the Grammys, per Page Six:

After Robert Glasper won the award for Best R&B Album for “Black Radio III” on Sunday, Chris Brown took to his Instagram Story to, well, be a sore loser.

“BRO WHO THE F–K IS THIS?” the “Breezy” creator, 33, captioned a screenshot of his Google search of Glasper, which described the 44-year-old Houston native as “an American pianist, record producer, songwriter and musical arranger with a career that bridges several different musical and artistic genres.”

No surprises here, since the dude has a long history of problematic behaviour, especially toward romantic partners. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault after brutally attacking his former girlfriend Rihanna, if you remember.

Sies. He shouldn’t be celebrated, period.

If you’re wondering, Robert Glasper received his fifth win out of 11 nominations across eight categories at the Grammys. He’s also written for, produced and performed on albums by Mac Miller, Anderson Paak, Banks, Kendrick Lamar, Common and more.

But we’re super proud as South Africans to see that SA artists Zakes Bantwini, Wouter Kellerman, and Nomcebo Zikode won the best Global Music Performance award at the ceremony.

The trio won the award for their hit song ‘Bayethe’. While this is Bantwini and Zikode’s first Grammy award, per Cape Talk, it is Kellerman’s fourth nomination and second win.

In terms of the other winners at this year’s Grammys, Beyoncé won a record-breaking 32nd Grammy Award, while Harry Styles won album of the year.

The Guardian has the full list of winners to check out.
