They will most likely regret this decision, but the City of Cape Town has introduced a ‘stupid rule’ button in an effort to make life easier for customers and staff alike.

The idea is to have a ‘button’ on their systems that allows for direct feedback on any rules, regulations or working practice that hinders the ease of doing business with the city. It’s a dicey move, but the potential benefits for everyone dealing with the bureaucracy of governments are huge.

“City staff now have a red ‘Stupid Rule’ button on their desktops that they can hit to let us know about any customs, practices, ways of working, or plain stupid rules they have to follow in their daily work that need to change.”

According to the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis recently introduced the ‘I mean Business’ initiative as a way to improve service delivery in the city, with the ‘stupid rule’ button aiming to get rid of ‘self-imposed red tape that is unnecessary, inflexible, redundant, or too bureaucratic to deliver a service quickly and easily.’

The City of Cape Town has introduced a stupid rule button for staff which aims to promote an ease of doing business mindset amongst staff, improve general customer experiences, and make it easier for businesses to thrive in Cape Town.

Unlike most of the ‘feedback’ buttons that only seem to send your details to a car dealership in Uruguay, the ‘stupid rule button’ will send a report directly to the Executive Director of the department that oversees said stupid rule. Once registered, the department then appoints a team to see how the problem can be made more user-friendly.

“Once this investigation is done, steps will be actioned to either amend, explain or remove the rule. The officials who work within these parameters on a daily basis have first-hand experience of how processes can be improved. We are looking forward to receiving their feedback,”

Finally, a little common sense in legislating the city. I sincerely hope that the city is ready for what is to come.

    Let’s right-click the pain away.
