Despite the much-anticipated re-release of Titanic this month, Cocaine Bear is the one movie that I will spend my money to go see in the cinemas. It may not appear on the Academy’s list of ‘best everything’ the way the sinking ship saga was, but it has a bear doing copious amounts of cocaine and then going absolutely crackhead on an unsuspecting group of happy meals. Take my money now.

Director Elizabeth Banks has however received backlash for a scene in which a group of 12-year-olds do drugs. Besides the fact that offering kids any kind of drugs is a waste, the Director was quick to get in front of the controversy and sat down with Variety for an interview recently during which she insisted that the scene is both necessary and relevant.

There were conversations with studio executives and the creatives as to whether or not they should age up the characters in question. We all kind of held hands and we were like ‘guys, they’ve got to be 12.’ ”

“It’s their innocence being tested. That’s what was interesting to me about the scene.”

The movie, which is currently set to release later this month, is loosely based on the true story where a bear in 1985 came across a 300-pound shipment of Columbian cocaine that had been dropped from a plane. Unlike the bear in the movie, the real-life Scarface hit the Charlie too hard and was found dead next to shredded bags of the drug. You could say he went a bit off the rails.

Cocaine Bear will be released on February 24.

If you haven’t already seen the trailer for the hilariously strange movie, you can check it out below:
