    Inflammation is a killer.

The immune system plays an important role in defending the body from any unwelcome invaders, but sometimes its response to harmful stimuli can go haywire and cause chronic inflammation.

This response can lead to a long list of health woes.

Inflammation is one of the biggest culprits behind brain fog, chronic aches and pains, hormone imbalances, digestive distress, skin issues, and numerous autoimmune diseases. In addition, it can also cause chronic diseases and cognitive decline.

If you experience one or more of the above, establishing daily habits that work to minimise inflammation could significantly improve how you’re feeling.

Every day we make choices around our consumption and activity that are linked to either preventing or causing inflammation, which is why doctors encourage healthy habits from the get-go.

For example, foods that are high in sugar, fried, or ultra-processed are linked to causing inflammation while vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, legumes and many other whole foods are linked to preventing it.

The stuff we drink also has a major impact.

You’ll be glad to know that pouring yourself a cup of coffee in the morning is one way to start the day with a habit that helps prevent inflammation.

But as Parade reports, according to healthy eating experts and scientific research, there’s a way to make your morning drink even healthier.

That is: adding a dash of cinnamon:

Kristen Yarker, MSc, RD, a registered dietitian who leads a team of dietitians in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, says that cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory spice and is a delicious way to give coffee a hint of sweetness without adding sugar or alternative sweeteners, which are both linked to causing inflammation.

Research has shown other amazing benefits of cinnamon besides just being anti-inflammatory, as it is able to reduce cholesterol and supports cardiovascular health.

    The reason?

One reason for this is because it’s high in antioxidants, which protect tissues in the body from damage caused by free radicals and decrease oxidative stress. This in turn prevents an inflammatory response.

Coffee, too, is high in antioxidants. If one does not have much variety in their diet, coffee can become one of the primary sources of antioxidants.

Adding an anti-inflammatory herb to a drink that is already anti-inflammatory is like getting benefits on top of benefits.

Add another benefit by choosing a quality coffee, like the finest hand-selected coffee bean varieties at Deluxe Coffeeworks, blended and roasted in-house daily to their obsessive standards.

Health benefits are just part of the reason why Deluxe Coffeeworks loves the grind, bringing premium beans to the people. Their classic House Blend, boasting perfectly roasted beans from Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Brazil, is a treat.

They also have more coffees from around the continent, including the rich Uganda Sipi Falls coffee, the lively Tanzania Malipo Maalum coffee, and the dark Zambia Kateshi.

The full range of beans can be found via the Deluxe Coffeeworks online shop or in selected stores, including on Buitenkant Street, Church Street, and Kloof Street in the Cape Town CBD, as well as in Bo Kaap, Stellenbosch, and Paarden Eiland.

As the Deluxe dudes like to quip “more coffee, more better” in an appropriately jittery font.
