Last week Thursday, police arrested two suspects at two Cape Town hotels while investigating a hostage situation.

But the hostage situation turned into a drug arrest after Tik, Mandrax, and a date rape drug were found at one of the hotels.

After following up on a tip that a woman was being held at the establishment against her will, the police managed to arrest two suspects, a 39-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman.

Although the 28-year-old woman had managed to escape the alleged perpetrators and had fled, “located in the streets near the hotel” according to Captain FC van Wyk, the police went to the hotel after the woman provided further information.

“An unknown woman opened the room door where the complainant was allegedly kept against her will. The woman was questioned, after which she voluntarily handed over two tik packets,” said Van Wyk.

After a more thorough search of the room, the police also found 1 011 tablets, believed to be Mandrax, and another substance called G-liquid, which is allegedly used as a date rape drug.

G-liquid (also known as GHB – gamma hydroxybutyrate) is similar to Ecstasy, but it becomes a depressant when mixed with alcohol and can cause someone to black out. Because the liquid is odourless and colourless, it’s sometimes slipped unknowingly into a person’s drink.

The woman was arrested on the spot and then her 39-year-old male accomplice was traced and located at another Cape Town hotel, where he was arrested, too.

Van Wyk said that this suspect was linked to numerous other contact crimes committed and reported in Gauteng.

Both suspects are set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today.
