Feel like getting some ink? Whether you want a massive pink flamingo done on your back or a tiny broken heart on your wrist as an ode to a crazy ex, the annual tattoo convention is the place to go for some beautiful artwork, awesome entertainment, and a fair bit of pain.

More than 22 Tattoo artists will be joining this year’s annual Tattoo convention in Johannesburg and Cape Town from the 26th of March to the 2nd of April. The show is family-friendly and those under 12’s get in free. Over the course of each event weekend, local bands will also be appearing onstage, and in between sets of local DJs will keep the good vibes going and act as cover fire for the buzzing of a thousand needles.

The South African International Tattoo Convention is a 3-day event that hosts over 140 of the world’s best tattooers from over 20 countries, giving you the chance to get tattooed by expert local and international artists specialising in a large variety of tattoo styles

Tattoos mean different things to different people. It can serve as a rite of passage, a symbol of religious and spiritual devotion, a pledge of love, or just as a reminder that our time on earth is fleeting, so we might as well add some colour to it.

Preserved tattoos on ancient mummified human remains reveal that tattooing has been practised throughout the world for thousands of years. In 2015, a scientific re-assessment of the age of the two oldest known tattooed mummies was identified as the oldest example then known. With 61 tattoos, the bodies were found embedded in glacial ice in the Alps and were dated to 3250 BCE.
