Legendary guitarist and astrophysicist, Brian May, has officially been knighted by King Charles III. May was made Knight Bachelor during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.
May’s name appeared alongside 1 100 other celebrated people in the Kings 2023 New Year Honours List, but yesterday’s ceremony finally gave the king a chance to lay his sword on his shoulder.

Despite being in one of the greatest bands of all time, Sir Brian earned a PhD degree in astrophysics in 2007 and was Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008 to 2013. He was a “science team collaborator” with NASA’s New Horizons Pluto mission, and found time for various charitable causes while still rocking out.
If anyone deserves to be knighted, it’s the guy who wrote We Will Rock You on a guitar that he built in a garage as a kid.
“Maybe a few more people will listen to me than would otherwise, you know, if it’s Sir Brian on the phone.”
May was particularly happy to have his wife with him and said she was looking forward to being Lady May.
“She’s thrilled to bits. Yes, yes, she’s very happy about that. Yes, Lady Anita will be enjoying it, and it’s a thrill to me to be able to kind of confer that on her. It makes me feel proud that she gets an honor beside me because God knows I wouldn’t be here without her.”
What a nice guy. And even though the Royals have been getting some heat from everyone lately, this is a pretty cool move, King Charles. Carry on.
