Our obsession with post-apocalyptic shows doesn’t seem to be going away, and after the massive hit that was The Last Of Us, a grim remake of the 2018 Sandra Bullock film, The Bird Box, is taking our future paranoia to a whole new level.
Maybe 2023 is the year we finally embraced horror, but Bird Box Barcelona still manages to up the fear levels, and according to critics, the show is better than the original movie.
Bird Box Barcelona is set in the same universe plagued by mysterious creatures that brainwash as soon as you look at them. But unlike its predecessor, which is mainly set five years after the creatures’ first appearance, Bird Box Barcelona seems like it’s going to unravel the day they arrived on Earth.
The original movie’s success was largely thanks to the mystery that surrounded the ‘events’. I recall my wife saying we should watch the new Bullock movie, and with a name like Bird Box, I thought we were in for another rom-com where a newly divorced woman heals and finds love while caring for her elderly father’s racing pigeons.
I was wrong, and with little to no warning Nurse Rachet wrecks their car and the world descended into chaos. Bullock then fights her way to safety with nothing but a blindfold and a badass attitude for protection. It was terrifyingly terrific, and with the release of the tv-series, we get to have another go at the horror.
Hopefully, they don’t drag it out too much like they did with The Walking Dead (TWD), which morphed into the Moaning Survivors after season six. Much of the success of shows like The Last Of Us is thanks to the creators getting on with it.Limited series is the way to go if you really want to keep the viewers. After seeing Rick and Michonne weep about their fate for a thousand episodes, it gets a little lame. Sometimes Netflix’s unlimited budgets are a bad thing.
One of the most overlooked limited series was The Lost Room, which aired on Syfy way back in 2006. With three episodes of 90 minutes each, it still remains the show I compare most new ‘sci-fi mysteries to.
Let’s see how Bird Box Barcelona does. Who knows, we might be introduced to a new Pedro Pascal.
