Ready for some hearty outrage?
There’s nothing like a little “fiscal dumping” to get the taxpayers’ heart rates right up. In fact, you might want to have your aspirin and beta-blockers handy for the latest deplorable government money-wasting antics.
According to an Eyewitness News report, the Western Cape government confirmed that the 110 BMW vehicles purchased in 2022 were never used, merely being parked at government facilities, gathering dust.
The ANC provincial caucus confirmed each vehicle cost over R850 000. That’s a collective price tag of around R94 million down the drain. We’re used to farewells in this country, but seriously, when is enough enough?
For over a year, sixty new BMW vehicles were parked at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell, while fifty others were at a government garage.
The office of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport couldn’t confirm the exact amount wasted, but since the vehicles were purchased without a plan, ANC’s Lulama Mvimbi said the affair constitutes “fiscal dumping”:
“These cars could be used to provide essential traffic services but instead they are just sitting there, costing taxpayers more money.
“The MEC needs to explain why these expensive vehicles have been sitting idle for over a year. This is wasteful and fruitless expenditure.”
Eish. Water, please, these are hard pills to swallow.
To make up for this nonsense, the Department of Transport told EWN that the vehicles were being prepared to be used for traffic services. Although, they couldn’t provide a date on when the cars would finally be used, claiming there were still a number of fittings that needed to be installed.
Classic.
