Reeva Steenkamp’s father, Barry, has died at the age of 80.

The Reeva Steenkamp Foundation posted on Facebook that Steenkamp died in his sleep on Thursday night.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Barry Steenkamp in his sleep, on the early evening of 14 September 2023,” the post read. “Barry was a blessing to many, and he will be remembered with love and great fondness. We find solace in the knowledge that he is now with his beloved Reeva.”

The last two decades have been a tumultuous time for the Steenkamps, with the last few months being particularly trying with Oscar Pistorius fighting for parole.

At Pistorius’ parole hearing in March, Barry supplied a victim-impact statement that was described as “extremely emotional”. He said he couldn’t sleep at night and couldn’t find closure until the truth was given to him.

Barry said that before he died, his one wish was that Pistorius would tell the family “exactly what happened on that night”.

We hope Barry finds the peace in death he was robbed of in his last years on earth. RIP.
