Three unknown men invaded the Coco Safar restaurant in St. James Piazza, Sea Point, destroying bottles and glasses at the bar, and sending terrified customers fleeing.
Customers who fled the scene took cover in nearby shops, unaware of what was happening.
According to Green Point Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, Peter Flentov, the reason for the attack was unknown. However, he added that it was understandable if people wondered whether the incidents were connected to the recent shootings in Sea Point that targeted a private security vehicle and saw an Israeli businessman who was allegedly involved in the nightclub protection racket being assassinated last week.
“This incident was not your run-of-the-mill Atlantic Seaboard crime. About a third of the reported crime is theft out of motor vehicles,” he said. “Theft not classified elsewhere is the next largest category. This includes pickpocketing and the theft of unattended bags and cellphones, etc.”
“It was not a robbery attempt. They smashed bottles and glasses.”
Cape Argus reported that a manager on duty confirmed the “attack” but suggested that further questions must be directed to the owner, Arno van Zyl.
Van Zyl on the other hand said: “I am unable to comment on an ongoing police investigation by the SAPS specialised extortion task team.” He confirmed that no one was injured.”
The Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum posted a message after the incident that said the residents of Seapoint were “unfazed” by the incident, with one person noting: “We seem to have daily incidents in the area. I am amazed at how complacent we as a community have become. People have crime fatigue.”
Sea Point is currently at number seven on the top 30 for property-related crime, so maybe it’s understandable that people are getting all meh about this sort of nonsense.
Last year, Sea Point recorded 298 cases while this year it is 339 cases, marking an increase of 13.8%. Seems the crime rate has gone up with the price of petrol lately. Nobody can afford either of the two.
