The police officers who arrested two suspects in connection with the kidnapping of a 42-year-old woman and her 25-year-old friend have been praised by the top brass for their vigilance.
The kidnappers, aged 24 and 30, took the terrified pair on a 77km road trip after hijacking them in Gansbaai. Police were first alerted to the kidnapping by a ‘lookout report’, after which they spotted the bakkie the group was fleeing in. SAPS tried to stop the vehicle, but they managed to get away and a high-speed chase ensued until the fuzz managed to stop the bakkie.
According to Colonel Malcolm Pojie, “The members proceeded with a search of the vehicle and found a lady who was kidnapped earlier inside. They arrested the two suspects and also seized a 9mm pistol and an undisclosed amount of cash which were found in possession of the suspects.
“It was later established that the two adults, a man, 25, and a woman, 42, were kidnapped and hijacked at gunpoint at Stanfords Cove in Gansbaai at about 7 PM. The suspects forced the male victim to withdraw cash in Bredasdorp at an ATM.”
The suspects face charges of hijacking, kidnapping, and extortion, as well as the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm. The two are expected to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court today.
Kudos to the police for acting swiftly and bringing these two miscreants to book. Hopefully, the justice system will be as ‘vigilant’ and keep these guys off the streets for a long time.
