A British long-distance runner, Tom Evans, has announced his withdrawal from the forthcoming RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town race after becoming the latest victim in the scourge of Table Mountain attacks.

Evans, who was a former British Army captain, was training on Table Mountain Road when he was attacked and assaulted.

The runner’s injuries and property loss have prompted him to withdraw from the 100-mile marathon.

Evans took to Instagram to announce his withdrawal, stating that he was “attacked and mugged on the trails at knifepoint where all my possessions were stolen. I am pretty beat up but I will be physically okay.”

The Ultra Marathoner has decided to go home and “make sure that I am mentally alright which is something that I have always taken for granted”.

We’re just glad Evans was left without serious injury, despite the obvious emotional trauma – something that has become a regular ‘tourist takeaway’ lately.
